How to Choose A Place To Live in Cairo?

If it’s your first time visiting Cairo, we recommend choosing a safe and nice neighborhood near the school, such as: Dokki, Agouza and Zamalek. If you would like to live Downtown, there are some nice, cosmopolitan and safe areas Downtown and it’s only 15-minute by car away from the school.

Students will enjoy a full immersion in Egyptian history, culture and language, as the school is near a lot of touristic places in Cairo, such as:

  • the pyramids of Giza,
  • the Sphinx,
  • The Egyptian Museum,
  • Khan El-Khalili,
  • the Fatimid and the Ottoman Cairo.

Dokki

Dokki In Egypt

Dokki combines both upper class cosmopolitan areas and local Egyptian areas and local markets; it has more than 40 embassies that include the French and Russian. Dokki is surrounded by main streets that lead to other nice areas in Cairo, like Zamalek, Agouza, Mohandessin and Downtown. Dokki is surrounded by the Nile to the East and you can find some apartments for rent & hotels that have a Nile view. If it’s your first time in Cairo, we recommend choosing to live in the main streets/squares of Dokki for more safety.

Distance from IH Cairo: the school is located in Dokki, so you may take around 5 minutes by car or 15 minutes walking to reach IH Cairo.

Transportation: Dokki is accessible by “Cairo Metro”, you can find Dokki Metro Station on Tahrir street, Dokki. We recommend ordering a car using Uber/Careem mobile applications if you don’t know exactly the way.

Agouza

Agouza lies between Dokki and Zamalek and it’s close to Downtown as well. It is a quiet and fine area, where the Nile Corniche lies along the east side of it. Agouza also includes many shops, supermarkets, restaurants, theatre, cultural centres and hotels. If it’s your first time in Cairo, we recommend choosing to live in the main streets/squares of Agouza for more safety.

Distance from IH Cairo: around 10 minutes by car or 20 minutes walking.

Transportation: Agouza is not accessible by “Cairo Metro” yet, however you can walk for 10-20 minutes to “Dokki Metro Station” or we recommend ordering a car using Uber/Careem mobile applications.

Zamalek

Zamalek is one of the upper class areas in Cairo, it is an island surrounded by the Nile from all sides, rich in green spaces and areas suitable for running in the morning. Zamalek is such a safe area in Cairo, it  includes fine restaurants, hotels, cultural hubs, coffeeshops, high quality grocery stores and supermarkets.  Around the area, you have the Cairo Opera House where you can attend a variety of concerts and discover different genres of music, especially Egyptian music and art in general.

Mohandessin

In Mohandessin there is a long and wide street called Gamet Al-Dewal Al-Arabia which is a cosmopolitan area where you can find international and local coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and sports clubs. We recommend living in this street or the area around it, such as: Lebanon, Shehab, Ahmed Orabi, Geziret El-Arab and Syria streets. There are some areas in Mohandessin that are nice and safe and you can visit them during your stay in Cairo, but we don’t recommend to stay in those areas, especially for people who have not been to Cairo before, such as: Imbaba, Ard El Lewa, Mit Akaba and Sahafieen.

Downtown

Downtown has a unique architecture style, it was designed by prestigious French architects who were commissioned by Khedive Ismail during his visit to Paris in the 19th century. The Nile river surrounds the area from the west side. Downtown has both classical and modern restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, the area includes fancy hotels and nice hostels too. If it’s your first time in Cairo, we recommend choosing to live in the main streets/squares of Downtown for more safety.

Transportation: Downtown is accessible by “Cairo Metro”, Sadat Metro Station is in the middle of Tahrir Square, where you can visit the Egyptian museum.  We recommend ordering a car using Uber/Careem mobile applications if you don’t know exactly the way.

Garden City

Garden City is an upper class cosmopolitan area and it is so close to Downtown. The Nile river surrounds the area from the west side. It is a quiet area, very safe, with tree-lined streets, beautiful gardens, and ornamental palaces, also it includes the American and British embassies which make it an attractive place for tourists.

Al-Manyal is not considered a cosmopolitan area, however it includes some beautiful and touristic places, such as Mohamed Ali Palace, The Nilometer and Manasterly Palace. Also, there are fine restaurants and coffee shops by the Nile in the area, supermarkets, hotels and hostels. If it’s your first time in Cairo, we recommend choosing to live in the main streets/squares of Downtown for more safety.
