First, you need to know what the IELTS test is and why you need it. Then you would know whether it is suitable for you or not.
IELTS is an acronym for International English Language Testing System. The test measures the language proficiency of people wishing to study or work in countries that use the English language to communicate.
The test scores range from 0 to 9, and there is a score for each of the language skills (listening – reading – writing – speaking), and the overall result of the test is the average score for all abilities.
The IELTS test is divided into two types. The first type is the IELTS Academic, and the second type is IELTS General Training.
Intended for candidates who are applying for higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment.
The IELTS Academic test is designed to assess whether you are prepared to start training in an environment in which you use English and reflect some of the language features used in academic study.
IELTS General Training
Intended for people who go to English-speaking countries for secondary education, obtaining work experience, or training programs.
It is also a requirement for immigration to some countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The test focuses on the necessary communication skills related to the social context and communication skills in the workplace.
5 Tips That Will Help You Get Prepared for the IELTS Test
1. Practice Listening Skills
Did you know that every recording on the listening test is only played once?
In the listening test, you’ll listen to different dialects of native speakers from countries such as North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Britain, so you should be able to understand these different dialects. You can listen to the news, and TV programs in different dialects so you can train your ears to recognize and understand it.
2. Read the Instructions Carefully
If on the Listening Test, you are asked to complete a sentence using only no more than two words, your answer must be one to two words; if you write three words, the answer will be wrong.
Also, in the writing test, pay attention to the number of words required, writing the minimum words is necessary to avoid losing marks.
3. Practice Time Constraints on the Test
In the trial, there is a specific time for each part of the test, and this time is limited, so you should train yourself to have time restrictions.
Simulate the tests and limit yourself to the time for the answer so that you would know your level, and also you can determine your strengths and weaknesses. Through this simulation, you can define the skills you want to improve and allocate more time to develop them.
4. Develop a Time-Saving Strategy
By having a good knowledge of the test parts, you can develop a strategy that helps you to save time and effectively answer each question.
For example, in a listening test, by identifying important words, you can focus only on the main concepts. In the reading test, for example, you can go directly to the questions first. Reading and understanding the issues helps you to answer more effectively and saves time.
There are different methods you can use; not all plans are suitable for everyone, so you must know the strategy that suits you.
5. Write Well
Reading and writing go together. To develop writing skills, you must read continuously, read books, magazines, advertisements, news articles, reports related to culture and science; you must learn everything available to you.
Reading will help you know the proper structure of the sentences, and also increase your linguistic knowledge. Use the words you learned to write sentences, and then go to writing paragraphs and make sure you organize the items correctly.
If you are thinking about travelling to any country that uses the English language to communicate, the IELTS test is the key to entering these countries, whether to study or work.
