How to Teach Series
The IH Cairo “How to Teach Series” is a comprehensive programme designed to equip language teachers with essential knowledge and practical skills. This series ensures teachers can effectively plan and deliver communicative, engaging lessons.
The 45-hour course is available both face-to-face and online.

Module 1: How to teach SYSTEMS (Total of: 17.5 hours)
1. How to Teach Grammar (3 sessions – 2.5 hours)
Equip your students to use grammatical structures effectively, making the lessons engaging and interactive. Start by understanding how the language works and the specific grammar challenges your learners face.
2. How to Teach Vocabulary (2 sessions – 2.5 hours )
Instruct your students in lexical sets suitable for their level and needs. Emphasise that without vocabulary, communication is impossible, and help them convey their messages effectively.
3. How to Teach Functional Language (2 sessions – 2.5 hours)
Teach your students the language required for effective communication in various situations. Functional language connects students with real-world activities, such as buying a train ticket, ordering takeaway, or making a complaint in a shop.
Module 2: How to teach SKILLS (Total of: 16 hours)
4. How to Teach Reading (2 sessions – 2.5 hours)
Help your students develop the sub-skills needed to comprehend texts from various disciplines. Focus on enhancing their receptive skills rather than understanding every single word in a text.
5. How to Teach Listening (2 sessions – 2.5 hours)
Guide your students in acquiring the sub-skills necessary for understanding spoken texts from diverse fields. Aim to improve their overall listening abilities, not just their comprehension of every word.
6. How to Teach Speaking (1 session – 3 hours)
Enable your students to speak fluently and confidently. Emphasise the importance of speaking skills, which are crucial for real-life communication but often undervalued.
7. How to Teach Writing (1 session – 3 hours)
Teach your students to express meaningful messages through writing. Encourage them to jot down their ideas without worrying too much about grammar, spelling, or other mechanics initially, focusing on developing their overall writing skills.
Module 3: How to INTEGRATE Skills and Systems (Total of: 6 hours)
8. How to Teach Literature (1 session – 3 hours)
Introduce students to literature, fostering an appreciation for the arts and enhancing their critical thinking skills. Literature often addresses universal themes and values, helping students understand and appreciate diverse cultures and perspectives.
9. How to Integrate Skills and Systems in a Language Lesson (1 session – 3 hours)
Teach systems (vocabulary, grammar, and functions) within a meaningful context while simultaneously developing skills (reading, speaking, listening, and writing).
Module 4: Supplementary Module (Total of:5.5 hours)
10. How to integrate technology into your teaching (1 session- 2.5 hours )
Discover how to incorporate technology into your lesson planning and delivery, empowering your students to become autonomous learners. In our digital age, integrating technology into teaching is essential.
11. How to write SMART objectives? (1 session- 3 hours)
Learn how to write SMART objectives with appropriate activities and assessment plans for each unit in the course book.
The four modules span 45 hours over 5 weeks. Upon completing this 45-hour course, participants will be awarded a certificate of achievement from IH Cairo.
We strongly recommend pairing the Supplementary Module with any Core Module for a more comprehensive experience. If you choose to take individual modules, you will receive a certificate of attendance.
