Advanced Phonetics and Phonology
The Advanced Phonetics and Phonology course is a 30-hour programme offering an in-depth study of the principles and mechanics of English speech sounds.
Through a comprehensive blend of lectures, discussions, and practical exercises, students will gain a solid grasp of both segmental and suprasegmental features of phonetics and phonology. The course also focuses on applying this knowledge to effective pronunciation teaching techniques.

Day One
Getting to know you and an introduction to phonetics and phonology (2 hours)
- Segmental phonology : how the speech organs work in English (2 hours)
Day Two
- English consonants stops, fricatives, affricates, nasals, liquids, and glidesÂ
(2 hours) - English Vowels: long and short vowels (2 hours)
Day Three
- Transcription rules and exercisesÂ
(2 hours) - Syllable stress and complex word stressÂ
(2 hours)
Day Four
- Exam 1 (2 hours)
- Suprasegmental features: rhythm and intonation 1 (2 hours)
Day Five
- Intonation 2 (2 hours)
- Connected speech features 1 (2 hours)
Day Six
- Connected speech features 2 (2 hours)
- How to teach pronunciation: identifying Ss’ problems and different approaches (2 hours)
Day Seven
- Pronunciation Demo and analysis (2 hours)
- Ideas for teaching vowels, consonants and connected speech. (2 hours)

Course Objectives
By the end of this course the students will have:
