About IH World
Over 70 years of experience in the international network of schools.
IH World has educated over 13,000 students: from children whose parents care about the highest level and effectiveness of teaching, to adolescents and adults who want to quickly overcome language barriers and prepare for international exams.
The excellent results achieved by the students of the school, the constant influx of new students and the constantly growing group of people continuing their education with IH testify to the quality and effectiveness of our teaching.
International House World Organization (IHWO)
From humble beginnings in a small house in Cordoba, to a global presence in more than 50 countries around the world, believing in the importance of communication and sharing ideas is what has led to us to where we are now. Our network of schools champion language learning, cultural diversity, and quality in teacher training.
International House History
Founded in 1953, International House is a global network of 150 affiliated language schools in more than 50 countries.
Across our membership network, IH schools train about half of all CELTA graduates in the world.
1953
The IH story started in Spain
John and Brita Haycraft opened “Casa Internacional”. John Haycraft was an inspiring teacher and educational pioneer. He was an early advocate of the wider context of learning outside the classroom by bringing people together in social and dramatic contexts. For him language learning and teaching were about communication, theatre, and understanding between people.
1953
The First Lessons
Lessons were about meeting together in a more relaxed family atmosphere, and having fun together. The school was basically just one room, but was the first English language school in Cordoba. After just three weeks of opening, through publicity and word of mouth, there were 60 students.
1954
First International Students
The first international students came to Córdoba to learn Spanish and experience customs and culture.
1950s
Introduction of Professors
In the mid-1950s, professors from Oxford and other prestigious universities visited and started teaching English in the city of Córdoba. John and Brita ran the Cordoba school for six years, then decided to return to London. The school in Cordoba is still running today.
1959
Two Big Ideas
Returning to London in 1959, John and Brita developed two big ideas: raising the standards of the teaching of English through an affiliated network of schools around the world and the practical training of teachers for the classroom. At that time, training for English language teaching, especially of a practical kind, was virtually non-existent. The Haycrafts had the idea of setting up short, intensive teacher-training courses to prepare people to face multi-lingual classes with confidence and skill.
1962
IH Rome
In the summer of 1962 an Italian school owner, Ausonio Zappa, arrived with a group of students from Rome and asked the Haycrafts to send him some teachers, and thus IH Rome was born.
1970s
Demand for IH Training
The demand for IH training courses grew rapidly. By the mid ’70s IH London ran up to five TT courses a month and courses were also offered by IH branches in Rome, Lisbon and Barcelona.
1978
The CELTA is Born
The RSA preparatory certificate was born, which was then acquired by Cambridge Esol and became the CELTA. The teacher training revolution began and was John Haycraft’s gift to the world.
