How to Teach IELTS

The “How to Teach IELTS” course is a 48-hour intensive teacher training programme crafted to equip educators with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively teach the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
Over six weeks, the course thoroughly covers all four sections of the IELTS exam: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Sessions Schedule

  • Getting to know you and an overview of the IELTS exam. (2 Hours)
  • Reading: sub-skills orientations and real-life examples. (2 Hours)
  • How to teach reading: matching headings, matching information, and matching features. (2 Hours)
  • Matching sentence endings, identifying information and MCQs. (2 Hours)
  • List selection, summary and short answers. (2 Hours)
  • Flow-chart completion, table completion and completing sentence endings. (2 Hours)
  • Teaching listening: sections 1 and 2. (2 Hours)
  • Teaching listening: section 3 and 4. (2 Hours)
  • Teaching writing: understanding assessment and the rubric. (2 Hours)
  • Teaching writing: to General task 1. (2 Hours)
  • Teaching writing: Academic task  1. (2 Hours)
  • Teaching writing: Task 2. (2 Hours)
  • Teaching writing: Task 2. (2 Hours)
  • Teaching speaking: understanding the rubric – Task 1. (2 Hours)
  • Teaching speaking: task 2 and example-analysis. (2 Hours)

Course Objectives:

The “How to Teach IELTS” course is an in-depth training programme designed to equip educators with the essential skills and knowledge to teach the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) effectively. Participants will delve into the intricacies of the IELTS exam, gaining a thorough understanding of its purpose, structure, and assessment criteria. They will explore targeted teaching strategies and best practices tailored for IELTS preparation, enabling them to guide their students towards exam success.

Introduction to IELTS

The course commences with an introduction to IELTS, providing participants with a comprehensive overview of the exam and its components. Authentic examples of IELTS tasks are shared to familiarize participants with the challenges students may encounter. Participants will engage in discussions and collaborative activities to establish a solid foundation for the rest of the course.

The Reading section

The course then focuses on the Reading section of the IELTS exam. Participants will learn about sub-skills orientations and task-specific strategies necessary for effective reading comprehension. They will explore a wide range of reading tasks, including matching headings, matching information, matching features, matching sentence endings, identifying information, multiple-choice questions, list selection, summary, short answers, flow-chart completion, table completion, and completing sentence endings. Through interactive activities and practice exercises, participants will develop a deep understanding of these tasks and learn how to teach them effectively to their students.

The Listening section

Next, the course covers the Listening section. Participants will acquire the skills needed to teach listening comprehension for each part of the IELTS exam. They will understand the nuances and challenges of sections 1, 2, 3, and 4, and learn effective teaching strategies to enhance students’ listening abilities. Practice exercises and activities will help participants strengthen their own listening skills and boost their teaching confidence.

The Writing section

The Writing section is thoroughly explored, with participants gaining a comprehensive understanding of the assessment criteria. They will delve into both the General Training and Academic modules, focusing on Task 1 and Task 2. Participants will learn how to teach the specific requirements, skills, and approaches for each task, including essay structure, coherence, content, and language use. Various essay types and approaches will be examined through activities and practice exercises.

The Speaking section

The Speaking section, the final focus of the course, will equip participants with the necessary tools to effectively teach speaking skills, understanding the rubric for assessing this section. They will explore Speaking Tasks 1, 2, and 3, focusing on idea generation, response structuring, and example analysis. Interactive activities and practice exercises will help participants hone their own speaking skills and acquire the expertise to guide their students towards better performance.

Practice Teaching

The course also includes dedicated sessions for teaching practice to allow participants to apply their knowledge in real teaching scenarios. Participants will deliver mini-lessons on reading, listening, writing, and speaking, followed by constructive feedback from the trainer to facilitate continuous improvement.
