The “How to Teach IELTS” course is a 48-hour comprehensive teacher training program designed to equip educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively teach the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
This course spans 6 weeks and covers all four sections of the IELTS exam: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

- 2 hours Reading: sub-skills orientations and real-life examples. (2 Hours)

- Matching sentence endings, identifying information and MCQs. (2 Hours)
- List selection, summary and short answers. (2 Hours)
- Flow-chart completion, table completion and completing sentence endings. (2 Hours)
- Teaching listening: sections 1 and 2. (2 Hours)
- Teaching listening: section 3 and 4. (2 Hours)
- Teaching writing: understanding assessment and rubric. (2 Hours)
- Teaching writing: general: task 1. (2 Hours)

Course Objectives:
The “How to Teach IELTS” course is a comprehensive teacher training program designed to equip educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively teach the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). This course spans ten days and covers all four sections of the IELTS exam: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
Throughout the course, participants will delve into the intricacies of the IELTS exam, gaining a deep understanding of its purpose, structure, and assessment criteria. They will explore targeted teaching strategies, techniques, and best practices specifically tailored for IELTS preparation, enabling them to guide their students towards success in the exam.
Introduction to IELTS
The course commences with an introduction to IELTS, providing participants with a comprehensive overview of the exam and its components. Authentic examples of IELTS tasks are shared to familiarize participants with the challenges students may encounter. Participants will engage in discussions and collaborative activities to establish a solid foundation for the rest of the course.
The Reading section
The course then focuses on the Reading section of the IELTS exam. Participants will learn about sub-skills orientations and task-specific strategies necessary for effective reading comprehension. They will explore a wide range of reading tasks, including matching headings, matching information, matching features, matching sentence endings, identifying information, multiple-choice questions, list selection, summary, short answers, flow-chart completion, table completion, and completing sentence endings. Through interactive activities and practice exercises, participants will develop a deep understanding of these tasks and learn how to teach them effectively to their students.
The Listening section
The Listening section follows, where participants will acquire the skills and knowledge required to teach listening comprehension skills for each section of the IELTS exam. They will gain insights into sections 1, 2, 3, and 4, understanding the nuances and specific challenges posed by each section. Participants will learn effective teaching strategies to enhance students’ listening abilities and provide invaluable guidance on how to approach different question types. By engaging in practice exercises and activities, participants will strengthen their own listening skills and gain confidence in their teaching capabilities.
The Writing section
The Writing section is thoroughly covered in the course, with participants gaining a comprehensive understanding of the assessment criteria and rubric used for grading. They will explore both the General Training and Academic modules, focusing on Task 1 and Task 2. Participants will learn how to teach the specific requirements, skills, and approaches for each task, including essay structure, coherence, content, and language use. Various essay types and approaches will be examined, and participants will actively engage in activities and practice exercises to enhance their teaching proficiency.
The Speaking section
The Speaking section, the final focus of the course, will equip participants with the necessary tools to effectively teach speaking skills. Participants will gain an understanding of the rubric used for assessing the Speaking section and learn teaching strategies for each task. They will explore Speaking Task 1, Task 2, and Task 3, focusing on generating ideas, structuring responses, and conducting example analysis. Practice Teaching

Course Content
How will course participants be assessed?
Along with continuous assessment throughout the course, an end of course test will be conducted and they will be given individual feedback along with an action plan for things to work on.
This is a 60-hour course and will run every Tuesday & Thursday for 5 weeks. By the end of the 60 hours, course participants will receive a certificate of achievement from IH Cairo.
