What is the Teaching Young Learners Foundation (TYLF) Course?

This is a course aimed at inexperienced young learner teachers or teachers who feel the need to refresh their knowledge when it comes to implementing effective YL teaching techniques. It is a practical course that focuses on developing teachers’ classroom skills to help them deliver effective lessons for young learners. The course aims to provide teachers with a range of engaging activities.

The course is divided into two modules.  Teachers can take one module at a time, or all two – you choose.  The course is 8 X 3 hours input sessions

Module One:

4 x 3-hour input sessions covering key areas of YL teaching.

Module Two:

4 x 3-hour input sessions covering key areas of using drama for teaching purposes.

Who is this course for?

any inexperienced or experienced teacher with a B2 level of English can apply for this course

Module 1 : Teaching English to Young Learners

12 Hours - Available Online

By the end of the course, participants will have:

  • acquired an overview of the main issues involved in teaching primary and middle school children
  • been provided with two lesson examples with lesson plans
  • acquired a range of techniques to use in their English lessons to teach grammar, vocabulary, and the four skills to primary and middle school learners

Teachers who are looking for practical ways to use drama techniques in their lessons.  This course is suitable for less experienced teachers teaching primary and middle school students.  Experienced teachers might find this helpful as a refresher course.

The course is divided into 4 sessions:

Session 1 – How Children Learn

This session examines how children learn, taking into account their cognitive abilities, motor skills, and the essential differences between adult learning versus child learning.

Session 2 – Topic-Based Lessons

Two types of child-friendly lessons will be demonstrated, and teachers will have the opportunity to participate in and analyse the benefits of these lessons in the classroom.

Session 3 – Classroom Management and Goal Setting

In this session, we will look at simple techniques for managing children, including goal setting techniques to keep learners motivated and on task.

Session 4 – Songs, Rhymes, Chants and Stories

A number of activities will be demonstrated and reviewed in this session.

This course will provide teachers with a toolkit of practical ideas to use in their classrooms and develop their confidence when dealing with younger learners.

  • developed their confidence in using drama techniques in class

Teachers who are looking for practical ways to use drama techniques in their lessons.  This course is suitable for those teaching primary and secondary/high school students.

The course is divided into 4 sessions:

Session 1 – What is Drama?

This session looks at what we mean by drama.  Drama is not just about plays and theatre, there are important drama techniques which can be used for confidence-building, concentration and classroom management.

Session 2 – Why use Drama?

The rationale for drama activities is examined, paying particular attention to some of the points mentioned above and other areas such as pronunciation and oral expression.

Session 3 – Drama in Whole-Brained Teaching and Learning

In this session, we examine the role of learner preferences (formerly known as learning styles) in language learning, and the relevance of drama activities in assisting learning for all ages.

Session 4 – Drama for Integrated Skills

A number of activities will be demonstrated and reviewed in this session.

Many teachers are often intimidated by the term ‘drama’ and its application to the classroom, often assuming that it means focusing on theatre and plays.  This course will provide teachers with a toolkit of practical ideas to use in their classrooms.

By the end of the course, participants will have:

  • acquired a range of simple drama techniques to use in their English lessons to teach grammar, vocabulary, and the four skills
